In science this year, I plan for the students to have a real-life, hands-on kind of year! It will largely be a project-based course, meaning we'll work on a project, learning content as we go. Our first project, for example, will be a research paper on earthquakes where the students will learn about earthquakes as well as how to use word processing programs to format a research paper properly, how to find good sources, how to paraphrase, and how to create a bibliography. I will conduct mini-lessons throughout this unit on things like writing a conclusion, tectonic plates, and what exactly is Wikipedia?
Other units will include Oceanography, where we'll explore the Titanic and then students will individually explore other shipwrecks or ocean wonders, writing a journal as they explore (virtually, of course!). Another unit will be Newton's Laws and Physics where students will create an Egg Drop device, a contraption that will protect a raw egg from a 50-foot drop.
Don't be alarmed if there is little to no homework! I plan to do (almost) everything IN class, where I can assist and answer questions as needed.
It's going to be a GREAT year!!!
